The cost of living in China is very cheap compared to Canada. As I mentioned in the previous post one Canadian dollar is worth six yuan. To give you an idea, here is a list of some things we have bought and the cost in Chinese and Canadian dollars:
- subway ride (one way) – 1 yuan – 16 cents
- DVD movie – 10 yuan – $1.60
- stapler – 8 yuan – $1.25
- men’s jeans – 49 yuan – $8.00
- meal for two people at the hotel cafeteria (two boiled eggs, an omelete, two pastries)- 5 yuan – 80 cents
Something else to consider however is wages earned by people in China. The average person in China makes between 800 and 1200 a month. Chinese teachers make about 2000. So when you make those wages things don’t seem so cheap after all, especially Western style items which are much more expensive.
